Dr. Gus (Dr. Agustin Arrieta) has spent decades inside operating rooms, as an ENT surgeon and as someone who has spent time in the medical device industry, he has been trained to push for precision and performance at the highest level.
But outside the OR, he saw a glaring gap.
Over and over, patients would ask him: “What should I do to prepare before surgery?” or “What will help me feel better after?”Patients were leaving surgery with instructions to eat ice cream. To sip Gatorade. To take Tylenol, maybe dose up on some probiotics. The same classic things we recall from childhood tonsillitis or tonsil removal.
There were no trusted, holistic recovery tools he could
recommend confidently.
Not for someone about to go into a procedure. Not for a parent trying to help
That disconnect stuck with him. He knew that wasn’t good enough.
“I've had a 20+ year career as an ear, nose, and throat surgeon. I've treated hundreds of patients with throat and oral conditions — from routine tonsillectomies to head and neck cancer. I understood the medicine. I knew the protocols. I thought I understood what my patients went through.”
Then my younger brother was diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer.
What followed— surgery, radiation, chemotherapy— changed everything. I was no longer the doctor in the room. I was the family member watching someone I love struggle to swallow, fight to stay hydrated, and push through weeks of treatment where his mouth and throat felt like an open wound that never got to rest. Every sip was painful. Every bite was a battle. Keeping enough fluids down to stay out of the hospital became a daily goal.
He made it through. We all came out the other side.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the gap — between what standard care offered and what I brother, and patients actually need in those moments.
I started to think “what would that solution even look like?”
Something cold and soothing. Something that could ease the pain, deliver hydration and electrolytes, and offer a little nourishment during the times eating feels impossible, but your body needs the strength.
So I decided to create it with Nyra.
